Focus on driving. Phone use is prohibited for motorists under 18, and texting and emailing while driving is illegal regardless of age. Playing games, browsing the internet or using social media while driving should be avoided. Don’t apply cosmetics or engage in personal grooming when driving, and NEVER get behind the wheel if you’re drowsy or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Make adjustments to mirrors, seats and other controls before you start moving, and enter any navigational information beforehand as well.
Avoiding distractions and following speed limits reduces the chances of being involved in a crash, but sometimes it happens. That’s why it’s so important to remember to wear your seat belt, whether you are driving or riding along as a passenger.
And buckling up is not just important for your safety - it’s the law!
Be sure you understand the restrictions relative to your current stage within the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system.
Obey the posted speed limit, including required speed reductions approaching curves, intersections, schools and construction zones, etc. Adjust your driving appropriately for time of day, weather, pedestrians or bicyclists, and any road hazards.
Remember, they're called safety rules because they keep you safe.
